That double-tilde trick only renders as strikethrough in apps that specifically parse Markdown, like Discord or Reddit — paste it into Instagram and you'll just see the tildes. The Unicode version here draws the line into the character itself, so it shows up crossed out everywhere, Markdown or not.

Almost everywhere, since the combining marks are a long-standing part of Unicode. A handful of very old or minimal text fields may not render the line cleanly — underline tends to be the safer fallback if strikethrough looks off.
This style adds a Unicode combining mark directly after each letter — the same family of character used for accents like é — so the line or underline becomes part of the text itself rather than a formatting instruction. That's exactly why it survives copy-paste into apps that don't support rich text or Markdown.
Strikethrough draws a line through the middle of each letter — useful for marking something as crossed out or retracted. Underline draws the line beneath instead — better for emphasis without the "cancelled" connotation. Both are shown on this page so you can copy whichever fits the tone.
